How to Make a Homemade 5 Gallon Bucket Air Conditioner

If there is one thing that always troubles me about the summer, it's how to cool down my house without killing the electric bill. Manufactured air conditioners and central air can be extremely costly, both up front and in the long run. Well, have no fear, The 5 gallon bucket air conditioner is here.

At a glance your probably thinking, why would I ever do this. There are tons of reasons to do this.

Cheaper than Buying an Air Conditioner

Air conditioners can be quite expensive. The cheapest I've seen an air conditioner lately is around $150. And now, think. How many of those window units would you require to cool your entire home? Yep, and that's before you even see what it can do to your electric bill. Central air is even worse. It works a lot better than window units, but still has a huge impact on monthly expenses.

The cost to make one of these units, on average is about $15-$25. That's a huge difference from $150 wall units. And best of all, if you connect this to a small solar panel as this gentleman did, NO MONTHLY EXPENSE.

No Toxic Chemicals

It's no secret that air conditioners contain chemicals like Freon to cool the air. These chemicals can be very hazardous. You won't find anything like that with the 5 gallon bucket air conditioner, as it is purely run on ice. That alone is an awesome reason to consider this idea.

Renewable

By far one of my favorite things about the 5 gallon bucket air conditioner is that it is completely renewable. It's renewable in the sense that, to recharge this you simply add more ice. As you will see in the video, this gentleman used a 1 gallon jug that he filled with water and froze. It's easy as keeping a handful of these jugs frozen and alternating them as the 5 gallon bucket air conditioner begins to lose cooling power.

Well, that's that. I hope everyone enjoys this video as much as I did. I will definitely be building a couple of these in the coming months as summer approaches. I have a few of my own designs that I've been working on. As I build them I will post the designs, pictures, explanations, etc.

Farewell, for now.
